VH1 has weathered unfavorable press this year because of some of its reality stars. But the network's shaky casting reputation hasn't scared away the young hopefuls who have landed a spot on VH1's "Frank the Entertainer ... in a Basement Affair," premiering Jan. 3 at 8.
"The girls on this show aren't the typical VH1 girls, who are trashy or strippers. There were no girls like that in the house," said Kerry Schwartz, 24, of Brooklyn. "[And] Frank was really sincere in trying to find somebody that he liked. A lot of these shows, it's about publicity, but he was very serious the whole time."
Frank Moresco, better known as "The Entertainer" from VH1's "I Love New York 2" and seasons one and two of "I Love Money," lives in the basement of his parents' Brooklyn home. Mom Susan and dad Gary are so desperate to get Frank out of the house, they're also on the show, narrowing down a pool of 15 women to find the right one for their son.
Dana Piza, 22, of Manhattan, wasn't turned off by Frank's living situation or the fact that he doesn't have a steady job.
"He's so loud and opinionated, just like me!" said Piza. "I'll admit it, I used to go for guys with money, but there was just something that drew me to him, so I was just like, 'Let me check this out.'"
Instead of moving into the typical VH1 mansion, with the requisite hot tub and master suite with a king-size bed, the "Basement Affair" contestants moved in with the Morescos (in a house down the street from the real family house, and containing a lot of the Morescos' furniture and photos), helped out with family dinners and lived under Susan and Gary's strict rules.
Cathy Nardone, 23, of Staten Island, wasn't nervous about how she'd be portrayed, despite the common reality-TV complaint that editing creates unfair depictions. Nardone, who previously appeared on ABC's "I Survived a Japanese Game Show," says she was ready for anything.
"I knew I would be portrayed a certain way - I'm from Staten Island, and I'm kind of loud," Nardone said. "The only reason I did the show was because I was really attracted to Frank, and I definitely have no regrets."
